Dear WKU Faculty and Staff,

The Bowling Green International Festival will take place on September 29, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.  There are many ways in which community members and students can participate in this enriching experience.  Details about the festival can be found here.

Ways to participate include:

  •  Volunteering at the event – Detailed information about available shifts and their associated duties as well as a form to sign up for a shift can be found by clicking “Volunteer” at the top of any page on our website.  250 volunteers are needed for jobs from helping children make craft projects to cleaning up the site.  Many of these are filled each year by students of teachers who offer extra credit opportunities for their students.
  • Hosting a booth at the event – Individuals, families, organizations and businesses set up booths at the festival that include cultural displays, activities, merchandise and food.  If you are looking for a fundraiser for an organization, food in particular is very popular.  Or, if you would just like to help enhance the festival, consider representing the culture of a foreign country or including edu-tainment activities.  Details about all types of booths can be found by clicking “Boothspace” at the top of any page of our website.
  • Helping to promote the festival – Even if you are unavailable festival day you can help by spreading awareness of the event.  Follow our page on Facebook and encourage your students and online friends to do the same.  You can find a variety of promotional materials to share on our website by clicking on “Promote Us” at the top of any page and more will be added later.  You can print a letter size poster to hang on your office door, community bulletin boards or the windows of your favorite businesses.  There are also web versions to post on your social networking pages or blog.  One which may be of particular interest is a coupon that allows two people admission for $5 (regular price is $4 each, children under 12 are free).  You are welcome to email it or print copies for all your colleagues, students, friends and family (and encourage them to do the same for theirs).  Links to our social networking sites, including our new Pinterest are at the bottom of any page of our website.

Thanks for your support of this educational event celebrating our diverse community!

Thanks and hope to see you Sept. 29, 2012 @ the festival,

Kim Mason

Opening Fri, Sep 21, 1pm, Kentucky Museum

This unique collection showcases the ordinary means by which Americans from many fields of study have achieved extraordinary things– the actual “tools” that have shaped the course of this nation’s history. Serving to educate and inspire, these items remind us that the actual instruments used by the highest of achievers are not magical or highly unusual, but rather that the attainment of excellence is often achieved only by the imagination and perseverance that personify the American spirit.

Fulbright for Faculty

The members of the Kentucky Fulbright Association, which is located here at WKU, encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful experience of a Fulbright grant!  The experience of a Fulbright is life-changing and offers opportunities to broaden horizons and join a group of researchers and teachers who share great interest in what other cultural groups think and do.

The Fulbright Program offers a great variety of opportunities in many parts of the world.  Some are for an entire year, others can be as short as a few weeks.  To check on the possibilities and dates, go to www.cies.org  which is the website of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, the group that administers the Fulbright Scholar Program for university-college faculty and for professionals.

If you have every wondered whether you would be interested in doing a Fulbright, come to the Faculty House next Monday afternoon (September 24) between 3 and 4:30.

As a part of International Reach Week,  WKU campus Fulbrighters will be there to share their experiences and to give you encouragement to try it yourself.  This is a very informal session in which we want to give you some ideas about what you might do, where, and how.  Even if you don’t think you can manage to go abroad, come by and talk with us about how we as faculty can take advantage of both students and faculty who have had Fulbright experiences and use them in internationalizing our community and curriculum.  You may be interested in finding out how to invite an international Fulbrighter to spend some time in your department.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact any Fulbrighter on WKU’s campus or just stop by on Monday for a cup of coffee and an informal chat.

Each Fall and Spring semester the Leadership & Volunteerism component of the Department of Student Activities plans an ALTERNATIVE BREAK for WKU Students.  These ALTERNATIVE BREAKS are held during the traditional Fall and Spring Breaks, and gives students the opportunity to spend their time “giving back” through various community service projects.

This year our Alternative Fall Break staff will be selecting only 20 students to attend.  Students will experience an exciting service-learning adventure at ONCE UPON A TIME ADVENTURES, which is situated between the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Cherokee National Forest.  The cost of the trip is $50.00 per student and applications are due by Monday, September 24, 2012.  The $50.00 fee covers transportation, lodging, and meals for the entire time.  Dates for the trip are October 4-7, 2012.

If you have students within the organization that you advise that you feel would be interested or benefit from this opportunity, please forward this information to them.  Our website has been updated with this information, and links to the application and additional information can be found at:

The coordinator for this year’s Alternative Fall Break is Mindy Johnson, Assistant Director of Student Activities for Leadership & Volunteerism.  Please contact Mindy at mindy.johnson@wku.edu, or 745-2060, with any questions.

Scholar Development hosting ‘Day of Workshops’ on national scholarships

WKU’s Office of Scholar Development is sponsoring a “Day of Workshops” on Thursday (Sept. 20) to raise campus awareness of nationally competitive scholarships and other opportunities for research, creative work and professional development.

Held in Helm 100, within the Chinese Learning Center, “Day of Workshops” provides an opportunity for students to quickly learn about the programs and application processes while interacting with WKU’s fellowship advisors, Dr. Audra Jennings, director of the Office of Scholar Development; Dr. Melinda Grimsley-Smith, coordinator of international scholarships; and Cheryl Kirby-Stokes, coordinator of nationally competitive opportunities.

The following 15-minute rotating workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

  • Critical Languages Study Abroad – at the top of the hour
  • Summer Research in the Sciences – at 15-minutes past
  • NGO Fellowships in Asia, Africa, and Latin America – at the half hour
  • National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship – at 45 minutes past.

“This is an opportunity for all WKU students to learn about national and international scholarships—awards that provide funding for study abroad, reward research and creative success, recognize community engagement, pay for graduate or professional school, and offer fully funded opportunities to gain unique experiences across the country and around the globe,” Dr. Jennings said. “We are delighted to share what we do with the entire WKU community and to help WKU students realize their big dreams.”

The schedule of “Day of Workshops” was devised to address scholarships with upcoming deadlines and fit the schedules of the many successful students of the university who are taking numerous courses and are involved many extra-curricular activities. It is not necessary to stay for the entire event; each 15-minute session provides a full discussion of the topic at hand.

For more information about “Day of Workshops” connect with OSD on Facebook.

About the Office of Scholar Development: The Office of Scholar Development is committed to helping WKU students in all majors and degree programs develop the vision, experience and skills to be independent, engaged scholars. OSD welcomes the opportunity to work with students interested in national or international scholarships.

Project Affect rescheduled for Sept. 20

Due to the weather, the third annual Project Affect has been rescheduled for Thursday (Sept. 20).

The campus and community engagement fair, coordinated by the WKU ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships and the Institute for Citizenship & Social Responsibility, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at WKU’s Centennial Mall. The event is designed to show students the ways they can serve their community by partnering with local organizations on and off campus.

Students will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with campus and community organization leaders about how they can get involved in various service opportunities. Several organizations are involved this year including WKU Leadership and Volunteerism, The Center for Courageous Kids, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, WKU Habitat for Humanity, and Kentucky SAFE Foster Care Agency. Many of the groups will have hands-on projects at their tables to get the students engaged in the idea of service, and students will have the chance to ask questions specifically related to applying their particular interests and academic fields to specific service areas. The event also will feature a live musical performance by Lauren Cunningham and Michael Meece.

A complete list of the participants, as well as an itinerary for the activities of the day, can be found at the Project Affect website at http://www.wku.edu/alive/volunteerism/project_affect.php.
